Dear Ol’ Smokey (take two),

My love for you will never die. It’s almost not fair to other drinks, really.

I mean, you’re half meal, half delightful libation. I went to visit you last time, there wasn’t much to say then and there isn’t much more to say now.

Spicy, smooth, bacony. Let’s do this again some time. Maybe next Sunday?

Love,
A

The best part about Ol' Smokey from The Roost? Bacon.

Dear Sunday breakfast

This is Sunday breakfast.

This is Sunday breakfast.

When it’s Sunday and you have bacon leftover, what else can you make? Eggs with some spinach and tomatoes (plus Sriracha!) to go with fatty, uncured, delicious bacon. It’s easy, uncomplicated and flavorful. Less time cooking, more time eating.

Dear stuffed French toast,

Maple syrup French toast stuffed with bacon.

Maple syrup French toast stuffed with bacon.

In culinary jungle known as breakfast, French toast is one of the kings. And the only way to make something delicious like that better is to stuff it with more delicious things. On New Year’s Day, I grabbed a couple slices of bread, this recipe and made incredible French toast drenched in maple syrup, filled with apples and covered in bacon.

Pair it with a cozy cup of coffee and you have yourself a wintery morning breakfast.

Dear Merchant’s Pub & Plate,

Merchant's burger

Merchant’s burger

Lawrence restaurants, step up your game because there’s a new player in town. The Merchant’s burger is possibly the most flavorful burger I’ve ever tried that hasn’t made my stomach feel like I ate a brick. Tack on a delicious salad and perfectly paired glass of brew and I’m in heaven. The “gastro” part of gastropub is evident in the amazing dance of flavors. By the way, did I mention the dessert menu includes bacon? Oh yeah, candied bacon on top of ice cream on top of a blondie. Let that soak in for a moment.

And no, I’m not ashamed that I’m going back for dinner again two days later. I will become a fixture here, whether you like it or not.

Dear Elvis burger,

Dear Elvis burger,

The Elvis burger from The Burger Stand

The Elvis burger from The Burger Stand

I could make endless Elvis Presley jokes about this unsuspectingly delicious blend of banana puree and crunchy, I’m guessing in-house peanut butter, but I won’t waste those precious minutes laughing and giggling when I could be eating. The only thing missing: bacon. It’s how the King would have wanted it.

Dear burger,

Duck fat fries and the Smoke burger from The Burger Stand. Whoa.

Duck fat fries and the Smoke burger from The Burger Stand. Whoa.

Dear burger,

How did I live without knowing that the mecca of burgers was at The Burger Stand in Lawrence, Kan.? I’ve only just begun to eat my way through this menu, beginning with the Smoke burger and a side of duck fat fries. As the menu describes it, “Applewood smoked bacon, smoked gouda cheese and chipotle-cocoa ketchup.”

Need I say more? Until we meet again, Burger Stand.

Love,
Alma
